The transition in mint mark on this type — from СПБ to СПБ/ФГ and through several assayer initial combinations — has made die variety attribution a minor specialty in Russian imperial coinage. The reign change from Aleksandr I to Nikolai I in December 1825 produced no design interruption whatsoever; Nikolai simply continued the existing type while the Decembrist uprising he had just suppressed was still being tried in the courts.
