Novodels of Soviet coinage occupy a peculiar corner of numismatic history. The USSR produced official restrike editions — novodels — primarily for sale to foreign collectors and diplomats, generating hard currency the state desperately needed. Fedorin 65H designates this as a confirmed novodel, distinguished from circulation strikes by die characteristics and surface preparation consistent with collector presentation rather than mint-line production.
