Nigeria's post-civil war coinage program, launched after the end of the Biafran conflict in 1970, was part of a broader federal effort to assert unified national economic administration. The kobo denominations replaced the pre-decimal Nigerian pound system following the 1973 decimalization, with the Central Bank overseeing a complete reissue of circulating coinage. Production of this type was contracted to the Royal Mint in the United Kingdom, a dependency that itself reflected Nigeria's still-developing domestic minting infrastructure during the early oil-boom years.
