Aleksandra Ekster left Kyiv for Paris in 1908 and spent years shuttling between the two cities, absorbing Cubism and Futurism before synthesizing them into something neither French nor Italian — a distinctly Ukrainian strain of the avant-garde that her contemporaries in the West rarely credited to its actual geographic roots. She designed sets and costumes for Aleksandr Tairov's Kamerny Theatre in Moscow, work that remains some of the most radical stage design of the early twentieth century.

Ukraine has issued a broader series documenting the Ukrainian Avant-Garde Movement; Ekster is among the most internationally recognized figures it claims.
