The sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus) was once common throughout Ukrainian river systems, particularly the Dnipro and Danube, but commercial fishing and Soviet-era dam construction eliminated most viable populations by the late twentieth century. Ukraine has listed the species as endangered under national law, and this coin was issued as part of the National Bank's long-running wildlife conservation series, which began in the 1990s and has documented dozens of threatened native species across silver and bimetallic formats.
The series carries legal tender status but was produced strictly for collectors.
