Austrian Notgeld of this type emerged from a genuine small-change crisis that persisted well after the Armistice — metal coinage had been systematically withdrawn during the war years and never reliably returned to rural circulation. Weissenkirchen bei Frankenmarkt, a small municipality in Upper Austria, issued these locally under mayoral authority as a practical stopgap rather than any formal monetary initiative. Bürgermeister Joh. Lenzenweger's signature gave the notes their legal standing within the community.
The Jaksch/Pick reference JPR1157-10.1 places this within the broader 1920 Upper Austrian municipal series, by which point many comparable villages had already retired their issues. Late issuers like this one tend to surface in smaller quantities.
