This is one of the Wachau Notgeld issues — emergency local currency produced by Austrian municipalities between 1920 and 1921 to address the chronic small-change shortage that plagued the young republic after the collapse of imperial Austria. Spitz an der Donau, a small wine-growing town in the Wachau valley, issued its own series under the Ranna-Mühldorf sub-designation, suggesting distribution tied to specific villages or mill communities within the commune.

Edmund Sieger's engraving work on these regional Notgeld pieces is technically accomplished for what was essentially a stopgap currency. Weber's designs for the Wachau series were among the more artistically considered of the Austrian municipal issues, which drove collector demand even at the time of printing — a known complication for assessing genuine circulation wear on surviving examples.
