Stefanshart is a small rural commune in Lower Austria, and this note belongs to the vast wave of municipal Notgeld issued across Austria in 1920–21 when small-denomination coinage had effectively disappeared from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply not replaced fast enough by Vienna. Thousands of Austrian parishes did exactly this: commissioned a local or regional printer, got the mayor and a council member or two to sign, and put paper into circulation that would never travel more than a few kilometers from its point of issue.
J. Rieler of Amstetten was a workhorse regional printer for exactly this kind of municipal emergency issue. B. Brina's design credit is worth noting — not a common name in Austrian Notgeld literature.
