Dezember 1920' and facsimile signatures of issuing officials at the lower margin. The right panel carries the large numeral '10' at the top and a circular medallion vignette of Saint Nicholas in full bishop's vestments set within an ornate cartouche, with the issuer's name 'Marktgemeinde St. Nikola a/D. im Strudengau' in Gothic script below. St. Nikola an der Donau is a small market town in Upper Austria where the Danube cuts through the Strudengau gorge — remote enough that obtaining small change from Vienna during the postwar Kleingeldnot was genuinely impractical. This 10 Heller note is one of several Notgeld denominations the Marktgemeinde issued to fill that gap, printed locally by J. M. Hiebl in the nearby town of Grein rather than sent to any major press. The official stamp is the sole security measure, which was entirely typical for municipal Austrian Notgeld of this period and generally sufficient given the hyper-local circulation intended.
