Sankt Lorenz am Mondsee is a small resort community on the Mondsee in Upper Austria, and like hundreds of Austrian municipalities it resorted to issuing its own Notgeld during the acute small-change shortage that followed the First World War. These local emergency issues were typically authorized at the Gemeinde level with no central oversight, which is why the quality and design ambition varied so wildly across issues from neighboring villages.
Alfred Gerstenbrand's involvement places this among the more carefully considered pieces in the regional series — he was a known contributor to Austrian Notgeld design rather than a local amateur pressed into service.
