Sankt Georgen an der Gusen is a small market town in Upper Austria, and this 10 Heller note belongs to the vast wave of Austrian Notgeld issued between 1919 and 1921 — a direct consequence of the post-war coin shortage that left even minor municipalities scrambling to produce their own fractional emergency currency. The volume of this output was extraordinary; thousands of distinct issues appeared across Austria in these years, many printed locally on whatever stock was available.
The Jaksch/Pick reference JPR0886I-10 places it within the first series for this issuer. Redemption of Austrian Notgeld was generally mandated before 1922, and most surviving examples were never exchanged.
