Mauthausen's wartime Heller notgeld was a purely local solution to the small-change famine that gripped Austria from 1915 onward, as metal coinage vanished into hoarding and industrial use. The Buchdruckerei in nearby Enns — a modest commercial printer, not a security press — handled production, which is exactly the kind of arrangement that makes Austrian municipal notgeld so variable in paper quality and print registration across the series.
Three signatories from the town council authenticated each note: the Bürgermeister, his deputy, and a Gemeinderat — an unusually full quorum for denominations this small.
