Comments

Austrian municipal notgeld of this type emerged from a coin shortage so severe that even small copper and nickel denominations had essentially vanished from circulation by 1919 — hoarded, melted, or simply worn out by wartime use. Stadtgemeinde Linz was among hundreds of Austrian municipalities forced to print their own fractional scrip to keep retail trade functioning at all.

Josef Dametz served as Bürgermeister of Linz during this period, making his signature here an administrative authorization rather than a financial one. The note was redeemable locally and had no validity outside the city.
