At left, the heraldic arms of Bad Aussee — a red and silver divided shield bearing two salt barrels above a trout — set within an elaborate foliate cartouche with stylised wing supporters. Bad Aussee issued its own emergency small change during the acute coin shortage that gripped Austria in the immediate postwar years. These Notgeld issues were a purely local stopgap — the Marktgemeinde authorizing and distributing them as the national monetary system struggled to absorb the collapse of the Habsburg economy. Aug. Matthéy in Graz was a regional commercial printer, not a specialist security firm, which is exactly what you'd expect at this level of municipal issue.
The 10 Heller denomination places this among the smallest-value Notgeld produced in the Salzkammergut region. Bad Aussee was a salt-mining town; even modest commercial transactions required functional small change that simply wasn't available through official channels in 1920.
