10 Heller Aigen

One of thousands of Austrian municipal emergency notes — Notgeld — issued during the severe coin shortage that followed the First World War. Aigen im Mühlkreis, a small market town in Upper Austria, produced these notes under the authority of its Bürgermeister, Franz Pfleger, as a purely local stopgap. The Austrian central government neither coordinated nor particularly endorsed this municipal free-for-all; towns simply did what they had to.

The Jaksch/Pick reference JPR0012-10 places this within the earliest, most utilitarian wave of Austrian Notgeld — before the decorative collector-oriented issues of 1920–1921 turned the format into a cottage industry.
