Fürth's 1923 Goldpfennig notes were a direct response to the practical absurdity of hyperinflation-era denominations — by anchoring fractional values to the US dollar rather than the collapsing Reichsmark, the city was essentially publishing its own exchange rate in printed form. The 1/42 dollar peg reflects the gold dollar conversion standard then in use, not an arbitrary figure.
The watermarked paper was an unusual security investment for a municipal Notgeld issue of this size, suggesting the city anticipated — or feared — local counterfeiting attempts.
