| Obverse description | Central field features a stylized African tribal mask — a elongated antelope headdress motif — incorporated into the denomination numeral '10', with the vertical mask replacing the digit '1' and flanked by the numeral '0'. The legend 'INSTITUT D'EMISSION' arcs along the upper periphery, while 'AFRIQUE OCCIDENTALE FRANCAISE·TOGO' curves along the lower periphery. The design is rendered in a bold, modern style blending African iconography with the denomination numeral. The word 'FRANCS' appears below the central motif. |

The Institut d'Émission de l'Afrique Occidentale Française et du Togo was itself a transitional institution, established in 1955 specifically to manage currency in the French West African territories and Togo as decolonization pressure mounted. This 1957 issue appeared just three years before Togolese independence in 1960, making it one of the final coinages struck under French monetary administration for the territory. Togo's status was distinct — a UN trust territory under French administration rather than a formal colony, a legal distinction that gave it a separate issuing identity from the broader AOF coinage series.
