The Democratic Republic of the Congo has issued a substantial number of novelty and mechanical pieces aimed squarely at the collector market rather than circulation, and this rotating calendar piece is firmly in that category. Kongolese collector issues of the early 2000s were largely produced by European minting houses and distributed through coin dealers, never touching the local economy.
The rotating disc mechanism allows the bezel to display any year across a 50-year span — a gimmick with a longer commercial history than most buyers realize, appearing in Swiss and German novelty coinage as far back as the 1970s.
