Reverse description A bare-headed, right-facing bust of Prince Charles III occupies the central field, rendered in high relief with fine detail to the hair and beard, in a classical portrait style. The legend CHARLES III arcs along the upper left periphery, with the regnal dates 1856 · 1889 continuing along the upper right. The engraver's signature DELANNOY appears in small capitals beneath the truncation of the bust, and the denomination 10 FRANCS is inscribed along the lower periphery. The whole is enclosed within a beaded border.

Additional information

This issue commemorates the centenary of Charles III's accession to the Monegasque throne in 1866 — the reign during which Monaco permanently lost Menton and Roquebrune to France under the 1861 treaty, receiving 4 million francs in compensation and, critically, French recognition of Monegasque sovereignty. Charles III used that settlement to abolish all direct taxation in Monaco, funding the principality instead through the newly licensed Casino de Monte-Carlo. That fiscal arrangement, born of territorial loss, has never been reversed.
