The Mines Domaniales Françaises de la Sarre was the French state-run authority managing the Saar coalfields awarded to France under the Treaty of Versailles as partial reparation for the destruction of French mines during the war. Because the Saar territory operated under League of Nations administration from 1920, it sat outside both the French and German monetary systems, creating a practical gap. These notes were issued as a localized industrial scrip to pay miners and facilitate commerce within the colliery zone — not a national currency by any definition, but functionally indistinguishable from one in daily use.
Romagnoli's engraving work here is notably fine for what is essentially an industrial paymaster's instrument.
