Niger's independence from France was proclaimed on August 3, 1960, and this gold issue was among the commemoratives struck to mark the occasion. The newly formed republic contracted French minting facilities for production — a pragmatic arrangement common among Francophone African states that had neither the infrastructure nor the time to establish domestic coinage before sovereignty formally transferred.
Mintages for this type were modest and distribution largely ceremonial rather than commercial.
