Additional information

One of several issues in the DRC's long-running program of struck bullion and novelty coins produced almost entirely for the collector export market — the country has never had a functioning franc-denominated gold circulation economy. The series exploits the Congo's nominal sovereignty to license internationally popular numismatic themes, in this case the Athenian owl tetradrachm, one of the ancient world's most widely traded coins.

At 0.5 grams, the gold content is effectively fractional novelty weight, closer to a charm than a bullion piece.
