The arms feature a leopard's head facing front, flanked by a crossed elephant tusk and a spear, with a scroll below bearing the motto PAIX, and two additional scrolls to either side inscribed JUSTICE and TRAVAIL respectively. The Grande Odalisque was painted by Ingres in 1814 and immediately provoked criticism from anatomists and classicists alike — the figure's back was judged to contain approximately three extra vertebrae. Ingres reportedly dismissed the objection entirely, prioritizing formal elegance over skeletal accuracy. The painting now hangs in the Louvre.
Congo's Famous Paintings series issued through this period used silver-plated copper rather than sterling, keeping costs low enough to produce collectible-priced novelty issues across dozens of titles. These are collector pieces from inception, never intended for circulation.
