Aversbeschreibung The national coat of arms of the Democratic Republic of the Congo is centrally depicted within a fork-shaped or arch-shaped decorative border on a mirror-polished field. The arms feature a leopard's head facing front, flanked by a crossed elephant tusk and a spear, with a scroll below bearing the motto PAIX, and two additional scrolls to either side inscribed JUSTICE and TRAVAIL respectively. The legend DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO arcs across the upper field in three lines. The date 2007 appears at the lower left and the denomination 10 FRANC at the lower right.

Reversbeschreibung The reverse displays a full-color reproduction of Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres's celebrated 1814 oil painting 'Grande Odalisque', set within an ornately decorated rectangular frame. The painting portrays a reclining female figure viewed from behind, rendered in Ingres's characteristic Neoclassical style with elongated anatomy and lustrous drapery in rich blues and warm flesh tones. The subject, an odalisque serving in an Ottoman harem, is depicted with a peacock-feather fan, a string of pearls, and a hookah pipe visible in the composition. The decorative border surrounding the image features intricate geometric and floral motifs, enhancing the orientalist aesthetic of the design.

Zusätzliche Informationen

The Grande Odalisque was painted by Ingres in 1814 and immediately provoked criticism from anatomists and classicists alike — the figure's back was judged to contain approximately three extra vertebrae. Ingres reportedly dismissed the objection entirely, prioritizing formal elegance over skeletal accuracy. The painting now hangs in the Louvre.

Congo's Famous Paintings series issued through this period used silver-plated copper rather than sterling, keeping costs low enough to produce collectible-priced novelty issues across dozens of titles. These are collector pieces from inception, never intended for circulation.
