Arthur Cayley was a Victorian mathematician, not an aviator — his inclusion in an aviation centenary series reflects a long-standing debate about theoretical versus practical contributions to flight. Cayley's aerodynamic research in the early nineteenth century, including his identification of the four forces of flight and his glider experiments at Brompton Dale in 1853, predates powered aviation by half a century, which makes the framing of this coin genuinely arguable.
Congo's novelty collector issues of this period were produced almost entirely for the European and North American collector market, with no meaningful domestic circulation.
