Ahmad II ibn Ali reigned as Bey of Tunis under French protectorate, and these coins were struck at the Paris Mint during years that span the fall of France itself. After June 1940, the protectorate fell under Vichy authority, and coinage continued under that administration through 1942 — the same year Allied and Axis forces began contesting North Africa in earnest. The .680 silver fineness reflects interwar French colonial monetary policy, consistently lower than metropolitan French coinage of the same period.
