Reverse description A stylised Melanesian ceremonial mask in left profile occupies the centre of the field, its surface decorated with incised linear and hatched motifs evoking traditional Vanuatu artistic heritage. Additional information

The New Hebrides operated under a Franco-British Condominium — one of history's more dysfunctional colonial arrangements — in which France and Britain jointly administered the archipelago with parallel governments, parallel legal systems, and parallel currencies. This coin was struck for the Franco-British condominium authority by the Paris Mint, filling a gap left by the absence of any unified monetary infrastructure. The condominium was dissolved in 1980 when the islands gained independence as Vanuatu, ending 74 years of dual colonial rule.
