The Institut d'Émission de l'Afrique Équatoriale Française et du Cameroun was itself a transitional institution — created in 1955 as France began restructuring its colonial monetary arrangements ahead of the independence wave that would sweep the region by 1960. This 1958 issue was struck just two years before French Equatorial Africa dissolved entirely into four separate republics: Chad, the Central African Republic, Congo, and Gabon. Cameroon followed its own path, achieving independence in 1960 under UN trusteeship termination rather than direct decolonization.
