Issued three years before Athens hosted the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games, this coin belongs to a multi-year Greek commemorative program preceding the event. Greece's selection as host carried particular resonance — Athens had staged the first modern Special Olympics World Games outside North America in 2011, and the Panathenaic Stadium, built on the ancient site used for the Panathenaic Games and later reconstructed entirely in marble for the 1896 Olympics, was the symbolic centerpiece of the host city's bid.
