Beschrijving voorzijde An aerial perspective view of the Benedictine Abbey of Seckau occupies the central field, rendered in fine engraved detail and depicting the monastery complex with its characteristic twin-towered Romanesque basilica, arcaded cloisters, and surrounding conventual buildings set among trees. The legend BENEDIKTINERABTEI SECKAU arcs along the upper periphery in capital letters. The denomination 10 EURO and the date 2008 appear in the lower right field, with the engraver's signature H. WÄHNER visible in the lower left field. The issuer legend REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH is inscribed along the lower margin in two lines.

Beschrijving keerzijde A dramatic interior perspective of the Seckau Abbey basilica fills the entire field, depicting the nave as seen from the entrance toward the high altar. The elaborately ribbed and fan-vaulted ceiling dominates the upper portion of the design, while the nave flanked by rounded Romanesque arches and clustered columns recedes toward the apse. At the far end of the nave, a crucifix group with flanking figures is visible beneath the triumphal arch, with the high altar and choir stalls rendered in precise architectural detail. The composition conveys the solemn grandeur of the Romanesque interior through skilled low-relief engraving, with the engraver's initials T.P. visible in the lower left margin. The reverse carries no legends, allowing the architectural imagery to fill the field to the inner rim.

Aanvullende informatie

Seckau Abbey, founded by Augustinian canons in 1140 and taken over by Benedictines in 1883, sits in Styria and remains an active monastic community — one of the few in Austria to have maintained continuous religious occupation across nearly nine centuries. This coin is part of Austria's long-running "Stifte und Klöster" (Abbeys and Monasteries) series, which the Mint used to systematically document the country's ecclesiastical architectural heritage through the 2000s.

The abbey's Romanesque basilica, largely intact from the 12th century, was where Archduke Johann of Austria was buried in 1859.
