Reverse description The reverse depicts a fully rigged 16th-century Spanish galleon under sail, rendered in fine detail after an engraving by José Espinós Gisbert (1877–1956), who joined the Casa de la Moneda in 1924 as an auxiliary coin engraver. The vessel is shown in three-quarter view with billowing sails, its hull and rigging faithfully representing the period warship associated with the age of exploration and transatlantic contact. The legend ENCUENTRO DE DOS MUNDOS arcs across the upper field, evoking the theme of the encounter between the Old and New Worlds. The mint mark M and the year 2002 appear in the lower portion of the field.
