Issued to mark the 170th anniversary of the Spanish postal service, Correos y Telégrafos traces its institutional roots to 1846, when the telegraph network was formally integrated with the existing royal mail infrastructure under a unified state body. Spain was among the earlier European nations to consolidate these services under a single administrative umbrella, a structural decision that shaped how the network expanded into the colonies through the remainder of the nineteenth century.
Felipe VI ascended to the throne in June 2014 following Juan Carlos I's abdication — the first Spanish abdication in nearly two centuries.
