The Erzberg — literally "ore mountain" — in Eisenerz, Styria, has been mined continuously for iron ore since at least the 14th century, making it one of the longest-operating open-pit mines in the world. The stepped terracing carved into the mountain over centuries gives it a distinctive pyramidal silhouette that has defined the region's identity more than any administrative boundary.
Austria's nine-part "Bundesländer" silver series, of which this is one issue, ran through the 2000s and into the early 2010s, dedicating a coin to each federal state. Styria's selection of the Erzberg over other candidates reflects how thoroughly iron production shaped the province's economy into the modern period.
