Part of the Monnaie de Paris' ongoing "Coin of History" series, this piece commemorates Cartier's 1534 and 1535–36 voyages to the Gulf of St. Lawrence, during which he claimed the territory he called "Canada" — a mishearing or adoption of the Iroquoian word kanata, meaning village or settlement. France never fully colonized the region during Cartier's lifetime; his third voyage in 1541 ended in failure, and it would be another sixty years before Champlain established a permanent French presence.
