Reverse description The reverse depicts a reproduction of a gold écu of Brittany struck during the reign of François I, evoking the historical coinage of the Duchy of Brittany. The design prominently features ermine spots, the heraldic symbol of Brittany, arranged within the central field. A Latin devotional legend encircles the design in the outer ring. The composition references the numismatic heritage of the Breton duchy and its incorporation into the French crown, situating this coin within the broader 'Coins of History' commemorative series.

Additional information

Part of the Monnaie de Paris' ongoing "Coin of History" series, this piece commemorates Cartier's 1534 and 1535–36 voyages to the Gulf of St. Lawrence, during which he claimed the territory he called "Canada" — a mishearing or adoption of the Iroquoian word kanata, meaning village or settlement. France never fully colonized the region during Cartier's lifetime; his third voyage in 1541 ended in failure, and it would be another sixty years before Champlain established a permanent French presence.
