Slovak Karst — straddling the border between Slovakia and Hungary — was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, jointly with Aggtelek Karst on the Hungarian side. The caves collectively contain the largest concentration of stalactites in Europe. Slovakia's commemorative silver program has consistently prioritized natural heritage sites, and this issue falls within a long-running series that began in the 1990s dedicated to protected landscapes and national parks.
Dömица/Domica cave, the most significant on the Slovak side, also contains Neolithic archaeological deposits — evidence of human habitation extending back roughly 6,000 years.
