Charles V — known in the Low Countries as Carolus — was born in Ghent in 1500 and ruled the Habsburg Netherlands as its native son before inheriting Spain, the Holy Roman Empire, and vast American territories. Belgium has long claimed him as a point of civic pride, and the Royal Mint has returned to him repeatedly across commemorative programs.
