Charles V — known in the Low Countries as Carolus — was born in Ghent in 1500 and ruled the Habsburg Netherlands as its native son before inheriting Spain, the Holy Roman Empire, and vast American territories. Belgium has long claimed him as a point of civic pride, and the Royal Mint has returned to him repeatedly across commemorative programs. The 2021 issue falls within a broader Belgian series tying royal and historical figures to the nation's self-image.
He abdicated in Brussels in 1555, the first European monarch to voluntarily surrender power — an act conducted in the very hall of the Coudenberg Palace.
