The Burgtheater, one of the oldest continuously operating German-language theaters in the world, was founded by imperial decree of Maria Theresa in 1741. Austria's euro commemorative silver program, launched at the introduction of the euro, assigned specific cultural and architectural monuments to individual issues — this coin belongs to that ongoing series pairing two Viennese landmarks on a single piece. The Vienna State Opera, reopened in 1955 after Allied bombing destroyed much of the building in 1945, carries particular postwar significance for Austrians who treated that reopening as a marker of national recovery.
