He is rendered wearing a jacket and spectacles, with a short beard, conveying a scholarly and contemplative demeanour. The curved legend AGOSTINO LEVANZIN · LAWYER · AUTHOR · ACTIVIST · runs along the upper periphery of the inner field. His birth and death years, 1872 and 1955, appear in two lines at the lower left, while the denomination 10 EURO is prominently inscribed at the lower right in bold numerals. Agostino Levanzin was a Maltese physiologist and pioneer of fasting research who, in 1912, submitted himself as a subject in a controlled 31-day fast conducted by American scientist Francis Benedict at the Carnegie Nutrition Laboratory in Boston — one of the most rigorous human starvation studies of its era. His willingness to endure the experiment produced data that shaped early 20th-century understanding of human metabolism.
The coin is part of Malta's ongoing commemorative series honoring figures who contributed to science and medicine, a program that has increasingly focused on lesser-known nationals whose international impact went largely unacknowledged at home.
