Agostino Levanzin was a Maltese physiologist and pioneer of fasting research who, in 1912, submitted himself as a subject in a controlled 31-day fast conducted by American scientist Francis Benedict at the Carnegie Nutrition Laboratory in Boston — one of the most rigorous human starvation studies of its era. His willingness to endure the experiment produced data that shaped early 20th-century understanding of human metabolism.
