Obverse description The obverse features the interlaced crowned monogram of Prince Albert II of Monaco, composed of two stylised letter A's surmounted by the princely crown, rendered in an elegant heraldic style. The monogram occupies the central field within a plain inner circle, flanked by twelve five-pointed stars arranged around the periphery in the standard European Union coinage format. The inscription MONACO arcs across the upper portion of the coin, positioned between the inner and outer borders. The year of issue appears in the lower portion of the field, flanked by the engraver's initials and the mint mark. The overall design is clean and formally heraldic, befitting the sovereign dignity of the Principality of Monaco.

Additional information

Belgium updated its euro coinage map design in 2008 to include Romania and Bulgaria following their 2007 EU accession, prompting a second revision of the reverses across the entire Belgian euro series. The portrait side was similarly updated around the same time, making 2009 the start of a compound redesign rather than a single incremental change.

Albert II abdicated in July 2013 in favor of Philippe, ending this type's production mid-series.
