Obverse description Left-facing effigy of King Albert II occupies the central field, rendered in high relief after a portrait by engraver Jan Alfons Keustermans. The king's royal monogram — a capital letter 'A' surmounted by a crown with the Roman numeral 'II' below — appears within the design. The portrait is encircled by the twelve stars of the European Union, evenly spaced around the rim. The date of issue appears in the field alongside the royal cypher.
