Obverse description Central motif is the Madara Horseman (Мадарски конник), a UNESCO World Heritage-listed early medieval rock relief carved near Shumen, depicted as a right-facing mounted warrior thrusting a spear downward toward a prostrate lion beneath the horse's forelegs. The relief is rendered in a simplified yet historically faithful numismatic style, closely translating the original stone carving. The Cyrillic legend БЪЛГАРИЯ arcs along the upper portion of the field, while СТОТИНКИ appears along the lower field. The date 2026 is positioned to the right of the central motif, and twelve five-pointed stars of the European Union encircle the design on the outer ring.

Additional information

Bulgaria has been an EU member since 2007 but has repeatedly delayed eurozone accession; as of the time of this writing, euro-denominated coins dated 2026 remain a prospective issue tied to a target adoption date that has shifted more than once. If this coin was struck, it marks the end of the lev as legal tender — a currency that traces its name to the Bulgarian word for lion and has existed in various forms since 1881.
