| Obverse description | The obverse features the Brian Boru harp, the traditional national symbol of Ireland, rendered in fine detail at the centre of the field. The harp is depicted with an ornate forepillar and decorative string attachments, drawn in the style of the historic Trinity College Dublin instrument. Flanking the harp, the country name 'ÉIRE' appears to the left and the year of issue to the right, both in upright Latin lettering. Twelve five-pointed stars, representing the European Union, form a ring around the perimeter of the coin. The design was engraved by Jarlath Hayes. |
