Obverse description The obverse features the second royal seal of King Afonso Henriques (1142), the founding monarch of Portugal, rendered in the central field. Surrounding the seal are alternating devices comprising seven castles and five escutcheons, elements drawn directly from the Portuguese national flag. The individual letters spelling PORTUGAL are interspersed among these heraldic charges, forming a circular legend around the central design. An outer ring of twelve stars, representing the nations of the European Union, encircles the entire composition. The mint mark INCM and the year of issue appear within the design.

Additional information

Portugal's euro coinage launched in 2002 with the pre-enlargement EU map design shared across all participating states — a design retired after 2007 specifically because the 2004 accession of ten new member states had rendered the geography visibly incomplete. The change was politically straightforward but logistically enormous, requiring coordinated die replacement across every eurozone mint simultaneously.
