Greece was among the original twelve eurozone members when euro coins entered circulation on January 1, 2002, but the transition was politically charged — a significant portion of the Greek public opposed abandoning the drachma, one of the oldest named currencies in history, in continuous use in various forms since the 6th century BC. The 2002 issues were partly struck at foreign mints to meet demand, and coins produced at those facilities carry small mint marks distinguishing them from Athens-struck pieces.
