Obverse description Central device comprising the Portuguese armillary sphere overlaid with the Portuguese royal arms shield, the whole flanked by two diagonal sword-like elements. The circular legend REPÚBLICA·PORTUGUESA arcs around the upper periphery, while the date appears in the lower field between two small decorative stars. The design reflects the standard Portuguese colonial heraldic style of the Estado Novo period.

Decorative floral ornaments punctuate the field on either side at the mid-level.
