The St. Veit mint in Carinthia was among the oldest in Habsburg territory, operating since the medieval period, and by 1629 Ferdinand III — then still Archduke and King of Hungary and Bohemia, not yet Holy Roman Emperor — was issuing multiples like this as presentation pieces rather than circulating currency. Ten-ducat strikes of this type were diplomatic gifts and court rewards, physically handed to generals, ambassadors, and nobles in the thick of the Thirty Years' War.
Fr#189 is notably rare in any condition. The dies for St. Veit multiples were prepared locally and used for very limited runs, which distinguishes them from the Vienna and Graz issues of the same reign.
