Aureus Magnus was a New York-based private mint operating in the mid-twentieth century, producing large-format gold pieces marketed primarily to collectors and investors during a period when American citizens were still legally prohibited from owning monetary gold under the restrictions that had been in place since Roosevelt's Executive Order 6102 of 1933. These pieces were classified as numismatic collector items rather than bullion, which placed them outside the prohibition's scope — a distinction the company leaned on heavily.
The "Manhattan" designation appears across several Aureus Magnus denominations from this period, functioning as a brand series rather than a geographic issuing authority.
